Water, Water Everywhere

When the cottage was occupied (by Serge's parents) they relied on well water from the field up behind us.

We, on the other hand, need mains water. It will have to be piped down the lane to the cottage. But we don't know where the mains comes onto our land. There is a man hole at the back of our house where the stopcock is, but there is nothing to show us how to trace the mains back to where we would like to take a spur to the cottage.

I tried dowsing, but without success. So the builders started digging a couple of trenches across where they thought the mains pipework ought to run. We were off to Bergerac, so we left them to it.

Some hours later, we returned to find a water company emergency engineer up to his knees in a water-filled hole repairing a broken pipe and fixing the new spur. The builders had found the mains!

We were quite glad we were out that afternoon.
