Making the French Windows

The cottage originally only had windows at the front, which must have made the interior dark.

We want to bring more light into the house. Also, we want to have access onto what will be a terrace at the back. So we've included French windows in our plans - from the kitchen and the lounge out onto the terrace.

This is the first hole through from the back wall of the cottage - looking into what will be the lounge.

And here is the same hole a few days later - a beautiful opening with its dressed stone edges.

A similar opening is being created in the kitchen. This time the view is from inside the house looking out to what will be the terrace at the back. The walls of the cottage are 50 cms thick and the dressed stone (visible on the outside) only covers half the depth of the opening. On the inside we have the red brick again (ugh!) to complete the sides of the opening but it will eventually be hidden with plaster.

Here are two general views of the back of the cottage - before and after the french windows were put in. The rubble-strewn area will be the terrace.
