Ceilings for the Downstairs

Ever since we moved here, the cottage has been open to the sky. So when we walked round the ground floor everywhere was wonderfully light.

Suddenly, we have to get used to downstairs rooms that have ceilings. The wooden base for the first floor is tacked down onto the beams and the light now only comes from the windows and doorways. The change takes some getting used to.

Then yesterday morning I was down there measuring up, and the morning sunlight was streaming in, showing me how the cottage will look in summer - that enticing mix of hot sun and cool, inviting shade.

It's also fun being up at first floor level for the first time and looking out through the small windows of what was the hayloft.
